The Powerday Foundation celebrates a decade of boxing support

26 June, 2025

Powerday, London's leading, family-owned waste management company, announces the recipients of its 2025/26 boxing bursaries, marking a decade of unwavering support for amateur athletes through its charitable arm, the Powerday Foundation.

These prestigious awards were presented during a dedicated ceremony at Powerday Hooks Boxing Club in west London on Thursday, 26 June 2025. The bursaries were presented by Mick Crossan, Chairman of Powerday; Edward Crossan, CEO of Powerday; and Lenny Hagland, Chairman of London Boxing.

The Powerday Foundation is dedicated to bridging the gap between regional and international standards and funding, significantly contributing to the future of boxing by nurturing the next generation of talent through this unique bursary scheme.

A select group of ten promising young athletes received 12-month grants, designed to provide crucial financial support as they strive to achieve their dreams of competing at an elite level. This unique bursary scheme, the only commercial one of its kind, is now in its tenth year of investing in talented amateur boxers across London.

The 2025/26 Powerday Foundation bursary recipients, poised to become the next generation of boxing talent, include:

·       Adrian Gonzalez (Islington)
·       Dylan Gibson (Islington)
·       Sulayman Elmeged (West Ham Boys)
·       Lily Bassett (TM Boxing)
·       Aaron Connor (Repton)
·       Courtney Pemble (Repton)
·       Billy Macey (Rainham)
·       Finny Baker (Chambers – Rainham)
·       Patrick Donovan (Powerday Hooks)
·       Muadth Khan (Finchley)

Since its inception in 2015, the Powerday Foundation has provided vital assistance to more than 80 young people, helping them unlock their full potential and excel at regional, national, and international levels. Notable alumni include Olympic Bronze medallist Caroline Dubois and World Junior Silver Medallist Damar Thomas, testaments to the scheme's far-reaching impact.

Edward Crossan, CEO of Powerday, commented: “Reaching our tenth anniversary of supporting grassroots boxing is a genuine milestone for Powerday. We believe passionately in giving back to the community and fostering the incredible talent that exists within London's boxing clubs. These bursaries are more than just financial aid; they represent our commitment to providing pathways for young athletes to succeed. It's truly inspiring to see the dedication and potential in each of this year's recipients, and we're excited to watch their journeys unfold.”

Lenny Hagland, Chairman of London Boxing commented: “Whilst there is a strong support mechanism at the top of high performance in British sport, it is the small margins that can make the difference to young aspiring boxers. This unique bursary scheme offers a lifeline to many talented athletes, enabling them to focus on their training and development without financial burden.

“We thank Mick and Edward Crossan of Powerday for this unique investment into our young athletes and also their continued support through the Powerday Foundation and Development Programme, which underpins the club system across London in the most hard-to-reach and marginalised estates across London.”

For over 15 years, Powerday has provided invaluable support in developing and implementing London Boxing Development Plans. Building on the pre-London 2012 Olympic Games schools initiative, Powerday has enabled exponential growth for amateur boxing across the capital. The continued support by Powerday has helped to fund London Boxing and over 80 clubs, attracting over £14.5 million in direct investment into the sport, facilities, and communities across London. This also provides access to the social, health, and mental well-being opportunities the sport offers to all ages, genders, and abilities.

London Women and Girls project goes from strength to strength

1 November, 2024

All Stars Boxing Gym & Youth Club was the location for a unique meet and greet session with international athletes. A team of female boxers from Berlin in Germany led a training session for both recreational and competitive members. This was then followed by a Q&A about international boxing and women’s growing participation in boxing overseas.

Clemens of the PSV German team worked with Terri Kelly of This Girl Can Box to deliver a fantastic showcase of boxing (which took place on Saturday 2 November). In the evening young local residents and members attended the gym, keen to discuss different attitudes and approaches to sport and what it takes for a girl to develop as a higher level athlete.

All Stars works with many deprived youngsters in the borough of Westminster and it’s bordering borough Brent. We were keen to engage and empower young girls to take up sport, incorporate it regularly in their lifestyles in order to develop more sustained inclusion. We very much wanted this session to be a catalyst for participation and growth.

The main ethos of This Girl Can Box is - ‘You have to see it to be it’ and this was the core tenet for the meet and greet session. Sponsorship from Sport England and Powerday Foundation helped make this a successful weekend of boxing.

FELTHAM COMMUNITY BOXING

WOMEN and girls free SESSIONS a hit!

27 August, 2024

What a great active partnership between Feltham Community Boxing Club, This Girl Can Box and London Boxing.

Members of the club enjoyed free training sessions and This Girl Can Box founder and London Regional Secretary Terri Kelly organised visiting speakers Aya Hijazi (Elite national champion) and Nida Khalid (an experienced and very enthusiastic judge). After a good work-out, Aya and Nida told of their very different journeys and accomplishments in the sport.

Nida told of her somewhat unusual way into becoming a judge and how the community in boxing is so strong, it keeps her hooked:

“The support I get is incredible, I just love it and I love being ringside.”

Aya had a tough route in as rules needed to change before she could compete; boxing with a Hijab was prohibited until a change in 2019. This certainly tested Aya’s strength and determination. Then there was Covid which meant no one could train, let alone compete. Her steadfast commitment and desire to fulfil her boxing dream paid off as she became the London and then the National Champion in 2024. Her wonderful (and heavy) belts were on display on the day. What an inspiration!

Thanks to all for their participation and positive feedback. We even had a few attendees volunteering to judge. They will be included in the next course in January; I look forward to seeing them on the circuit.

London Women & girls show

a celebration of women in boxing

In the Community: London Women & Girls Project

Earlsfield ABC was the destination as the London Women and Girls Project descended upon South London for a special event that underscored the importance of promoting female participation in boxing.

From start to finish, the club was buzzing with energy and excitement as Matchroom stars Ellie Scotney and Shannon Ryan added an extra sprinkling of stardust, with Ellie even bringing along her world title belts for youngsters to see!

“This wasn’t just another boxing event, but a celebration of female empowerment, athleticism and community spirit.”

London Boxing joined forces with This Girl Can Box as part of an Active Partnership, sponsored by Sport England and the Powerday Foundation. As part of the London Women and Girls Project, a show was put together aimed at inspiring and increasing participation in sport. Matchroom Boxing and 258 management got onboard and sent along world champion Ellie Scotney as well as Shannon Ryan to hand out prizes but more importantly, to inspire young girls and women by talking about their journeys and achievements in sport.

Both Sky and BBC News were in attendance covering and broadcasting the same day. The atmosphere was electric.
